DATE: August 6, 2004
SUBJECT: City Council Meeting - August 12, 2004
ITEM: *13.A.1. Consider a resolution authorizing the closing of streets on August
21, 2004 for the "5K for Clay" fun run/walk.
Department: Police Department
Staff Person: Bryan Williams, Police Chief
Justification:
This road closure would all the City Parks and Recreation Department, through the Clay
Madsen Recreation Center, to conduct its inaugural "5k for Clay" benefit fun run/walk. This is
a Clay Madsen Recreation Center Advisory Board project.
The benefit is being conducted in honor of Clay Madsen. The goal of the event is to reinforce
the idea that the Madsen Rec Center is a safe place for children and adults to learn the
leadership and sportsmanship qualities that Clay Madsen held throughout his life.
The Center is a 55,000 square foot facility that houses two full size gymnasiums, a six lane,
25 yard lap pool, four racquetball courts, a cardio/weight room, an aerobics/dance room,
meeting rooms, game room, and a full kitchen. Any profits from the event will be used to
purchase gym equipment.
Clay Madsen was born in Georgetown, grew up in Round Rock, and attended Round Rock
High School. He excelled in varsity football and baseball, as well as academically. He was a
Christian role model who lost a two-year bout with cancer.
