City Council Agenda Summary Sheet Consider a resolution in support of locating the National Museum of the American Latino Agenda Caption: in Central Texas. Meeting Date: May 13, 2010 Department: Administration Staff Person making presentation: Jim Nuse City Manager Item Summary: This resolution is in support of Proyecto Mosaico's bid to bring the National Museum of the American Latino to Austin to celebrate the history, contributions and story of the American Latino. In May 2008, the Commission to Study the Potential Creation of a National Museum of the American Latino was signed into law (Public Law 110-229 [5.2739]). Commission members were tasked with studying over a two-year period the feasibility of and plan for a new national museum in Washington D.C. A leadership group, Proyecto Mosaico, is working to get the Commission to consider Austin as the appropriate home for the museum. Austin is a globally recognized center of scholarship, innovation and creativity and has a blended Latino culture and demographic. Nearly one in five U.S. Latinos—more than 8.5 million people—live in Texas, of which about 90% reside within a 3 -hour drive of the Austin -Round Rock area. The museum would provide a home for the historical artifacts, images and personal stories documenting over 500 years of American Latino contributions to the United States. The museum would serve as an educational tool for the thousands of anticipated visitors. It would also serve to instill a sense of pride in the Latino community today and in the future. This museum would potentially employ up to 500 Central Texans and bring up to 1.5 million visitors to the area each year. Strategic Plan Relevance: Among desired results is preserving community character and history, and providing cultural opportunities for residents and visitors. A national museum of this magnitude would have regional reach and benefits. Cost: N/A Source of Funds: N/A Date of Public Hearing (if required): N/A Recommended Action: Staff recommends approval
