I Consider an ordinance amending Chapter 42, Section 42-128, Code of Ordinances (2010 Agenda Caption: Edition), repealing certain school speed zones. (First Reading) i Meeting Date: May 10, 2012 f e Department: Transportation Staff Person making presentation: Gary Hudder i Transportation Director s 4 Item Summary: 4 This ordinance will repeal all of the special school speed zones within the City of Round Rock, effective June 1, 2012, after the current school year has been completed. Transportation staff has been working with the Round Rock Police Department and transportation officials with Round Rock Independent School District to remove unnecessary and unenforceable school speed zones and to modify others to the appropriate length, such that they can be legally enforced, which includes cell phone restrictions. This ordinance to repeal all school zones is the first in a two-step effort to re-set all school speed zones. A second ordinance request will follow to create school speed zones that meet current state law criteria and that more effectively protect students crossing the City's streets and roadways. Once the new ordinance has received Council approval, the effective changes will be implemented prior to the beginning of the 2012-2013 school year.
