R-2020-0027 - 1/23/2020RESOLUTION NO. R-2020-0027 WHEREAS, a written request was submitted to the City Manager to name the new Transportation and Utilities Administration Building in honor of former City Manager, Robert ("Bob") L. Bennett; and WHEREAS, the request was submitted to a committee consisting of the City Manager and three council members appointed by the Mayor in compliance with the City's policy for naming city facilities; and WHEREAS, the committee researched, reviewed, and studied the request and has recommended that the request be approved; and WHEREAS, in 1976, Robert ("Bob") L. Bennett began a long, distinguished career with the City of Round Rock when he was hired as the City's first Director of Planning and Zoning, and later served as City Manager between 1979 and 2003; and WHEREAS, as City Manager, Bob was instrumental in the development of the City's transportation system by leading the effort to create The Round Rock Transportation Development Corporation which utilizes the sales tax revenues generated by the corporation to build and/or improve major roadways in the City; and WHEREAS, Bob was also instrumental in the development of the City's water and wastewater utility systems in securing a long-term water supply by purchasing surface water rights in Lake Georgetown, and by creating a regional wastewater system - Brushy Creek Regional Wastewater Plant; and WHEREAS, Bob accomplished much more than just improvements to the transportation, water and wastewater systems, he also successfully negotiated with Michael Dell to locate the corporate headquarters of Dell Computer in Round Rock, and with Nolan Ryan and family to locate the Round Rock Express minor league baseball team in Round Rock; and 0112 20202; 00437885 WHEREAS, under Bob's leadership, the City constructed a new library, City Hall, the downtown parking garage, the McConico Building, the Baca Building and several fire stations; and WHEREAS, Bob's contribution to the City in general and more importantly, to the City's transportation department and public utility department, make him an appropriate choice for naming the new transportation and utility administration building in his honor, Now Therefore BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ROUND ROCK, TEXAS, That the new Transportation and Utilities Administration Building is hereby officially named in honor of Robert ("Bob") L. Bennett. The City Council hereby finds and declares that written notice of the date, hour, place and subject of the meeting at which this Resolution was adopted was posted and that such meeting was open to the public as required by law at all times during which this Resolution and the subject matter hereof were discussed, considered and formally acted upon, all as required by the Open Meetings Act, Chapter 551, Texas Government Code, as amended.
