Consider authorizing the City Manager to execute a Grant Award to accept funds for the
purchase and training of a new canine and the training.
The Round Rock Police Department maintains an active canine unit that enhances the
department's overall mission. The unit has a high level of training which routinely exceeds
industry standards. Members of the unit are active within the community attending
numerous events with their canine partners, strengthening the relationship between the
Police Department and the community we serve. The Department seeks to apply for a grant
from the Greater Round Rock Community Foundation to fund one canine unit to replace a
dog that recently retired from service and pay for the training of the new canine and handler.
This grant is a one-time application for $10,000 in grant funding. There is no match
requirement.

To meet the canines and their handlers` high standards, the Canine Unit conducts weekly training
documented in an internal database. The canines, and their handlers, are also required to certify
annually on the various odors they are trained to detect_ All community events attended by the Unit are
documented, and quarterly reports are generated that detail those events and training hours, number of
deployments, and other various areas of interest_
