We would recommend that the city approve the rezoning request for this site. Our plans for the building are to either move the school to another site or to have the building razed. The building is in very poor condition and does contain a great deal of asbestos which may make it very difficult to save. Preliminary estimates to move and repair the building exceed $150,000.00. We have scheduled a meeting on March 25, 1997, with several key community leaders to discuss the options for the building. Thank you in advance for your assistance with the rezoning of this site for commercial use. The building is a simple rectangle with no architectural significance. The Board of Trustees of the Round Rock Independent School District named the latest middle school after this old school in an effort to transfer the cultural heritage of the black community to the 21st Century. 1 have included an estimate from a local architect for the renovation to that old building. As can be seen a new building can be built for less money and the new building would not be a money pit as the old one would be in the future. (RRISD) (Second Reading) Staff Resource Person: Joe Vining Staff Recommendation: Approval Questions about the old Hopewell school were raised at the last meeting. Staff has learned that the old school site will probably be demolished because of environmental concerns. Large amounts of asbestos are in the structure and the cost to remove it make restoration very expensive. A letter from the school district is attached.
