City of Round Rock, Texas
DATE: May 9, 1989
SUBJECT: Council Agenda, May 11, 1989
ITEM: 16C. Consider a resolution authorizing the Mayor to enter
into an agreement for the purchase of a street
sweeper.
STAFF RESOURCE PERSON: Jim Nuse
STAFF RECOMMENDATION: On April 10, 1989, the City received two
bids for a street sweeper. Underground, Inc., submitted $75,500
for a Ravo, and Naylor Supply submitted $73,500 fora Peabody Meyers.
Staff recommends the bid of Naylor Supply for $73,500.
ECONOMIC IMPACT: The Peabody- Meyers Alpha 350 sweeper is a new product.
The Sun -vac vacuum mechanism has been in use for years. These have
been truck mounted hereto fore. The Alpha 350 has a Cummins deisel
motor, caterpillar front axel, and Linde hydraulic components. Concerns
have been raised that since this is a new product, the bugs may
not have been worked out yet. Accordingly, we have requested and
received two additional years of parts and freight beyond the one
year parts and labor warranty. Also, the Public Works staff has
researched the cost of parts for the two machines. The Ravo, for
the categories of parts surveyed (alternator, motor replacement,
bulbs and lights, sweeper replacement) were considerably higher
cost than the Peabody- Meyers Alpha.
DATE: April 10, 1989

Pasadena, Texas for $73,550. Both machines meet all specifications therefore
I recoirnnend we, the City of Round Rock accept the low bid.

The most
versatile
sweeper sold
With a length of 4255 mm (13%11")
the Ravo 4000 Compact offers
unparalleled manoeuvrability
and unmatched efficiency, whether
sweeping between parked cars or
on long straightaways. Its 4 m (5.5
cu. yds.) debriscontalner, 700 liters
(185 US gal.) watertank, and the
5375 kg (11850 lbs.) total load
capacity make a full days sweeping
possible without having to discharge
the load.
A single economical diesel engine
drives the hydraulically powered
suction fan, brooms, steerjng and .
hydrostatic propulsion system, all of
which can be controlled indepen-
dently.
Additionally, the Ravo 4000
Compact is built from the very best
components and materials:
— Stainless steel debris - container.
Being constantly exposed to wet
or corrosive debris, stainless steel
Is the obvious choise.
— Cor -ten steel frame.
Because the watertanks are
incorporated in the frame we
chose to build it from 5 mm (.2 ")
cor -ten steel because of the
extreme durability and water -
resistance.
All the components are built on
special jigs to assure exacting
tolerances and continuous
quality control.
Faith in our quality
We offer a full one -year or 1000
hour warranty against manufac-
turers defects on all parts, except
tires, batteries and standard wear
items.
Powerful dirt pick-
up and unique
dump system
1 RAVO
4000
The brooms and suctionnozzle
are located forward of the front
wheels, covering a sweeping -path
of 2000 mm (6'.6 "). Therefore the
debris is moved toward the nozzle
without being compressed by the
tires. Water spray bars are
mounted in front of the brooms to
suppress the dust
The fan in the container, rotating
at about 2800 rpm. creates an
airflow in the suctiontube of
approximately 150 m per minute
(7000 cfm.)
This causes all debris from bricks
to leaves, tin cans to bottles and
anything that has a size not bigger
than 250 mm (10 ").tubular to be
thrown to the rear of the container
thereby compressing the material
at the same time.
The air will flow through the
filtration screens inside the
container and, on the standard
machine, exit through the rear
door.
By means of the ejection mat,
the debris is pushed out instead
of tipped.
This powerful system is capable
of ejecting a full 5375 kg (11850
lbs.) load.
This procedure is smooth and
permits dumping In stages, where
necessary.
r
The daily washout of the Ravo
4000 Compact requires no more
than a few minutes.
Just turn on the fan, aim the water
toward it and the entire system is
easily flushed.
The stainless steel of the hopper
provides a smooth surface to
which the debris will not cling.

Easy sweeping
in odd corners
The 83° steering angle, together
with the hydraulically operated
broom carriage, allow the operator
to sweep just about anywhere.
An extremely short wheelbase,
combined with a sophisticated
broom - carriage which is located
forward of the front wheels (rather
than between the two axles)
enables the machine to sweep
90° inside comers and 270°
outside comers without reversing.
Because of the size of the Ravo
4000 Compact narrow streets or
alleys are easily accessible.
The drawing below shows how
close the sweeper can approach
a parked car, leaving a minimum
area unsweptl
Superior operator
comfort
The sound insulated cab noise
level, under 78 dba, offers the
operator an unexpectedly pleasant
working environment Sitting In
his fully adjustable spring
suspended Bostrom seat he has
easy access to all operating controls.
While sweeping the operator can
keep an eye on the suction -
nozzle through the inspection
window in the floor. The moment
a larger obstacle appears in front
of the nozzle, he can actually see
it and lift the nozzle -flap to allow a
free passage.
The unique cabdesign allows the
operator to look down and see the
broom.
Two convex truck -size mirrors
mounted on the cab provide
excellent visibility to the rear.
All this can be done while
listening to the quality AM /FM
radio which comes standard with
all Ravo 4000 Compact Street
Sweepers.
