Consider a resolution revising the 1994 -1995 Child Safety Fines Budget. STAFF RESOURCE PERSON: Joanne Land STAFF RECOMMENDATION: Earlier this year the Council approved a budget for fines collected for moving violations ticketed in a school zone. The monies can only be used to make improvements to school zones. Staff is requesting the Council approve spending $1,816.00 out of the $4,956.00 account balance to purchase standard school zones signs. We propose to purchase 50 signs and 25 poles (diagram is attached). This will enable staff to replace non - conforming signs and install new signs where necessary. The attached maps indicate where the signs will be placed. The Court Team is still working on the criteria for the placement of flashing school zone signs. This criteria should be completed by the next budget year. Staff recommends approval. ECONOMIC IMPACT: $1816.00 out of the Child Safety Fines Budget plus the time of two street employees to erect or replace the signs. I would like to see the city to make all school zone signs uniform by replacing those that are existing that do not match those I am suggesting we use as attached on next page. We now have school zone signs that are yellow at the High School area and at other schools they may be a different color and worded different. It woud be to everybody's advantage to have one sign make up at all locations and to have replacement signs available to replace signs as needed. I estimate that to place signs at locations we discussed on streets that intersect shool zone areas as well as replacing existing signs that do not match we would need about fifty (50) school zone signs as well as needing 25 posts to install new sign placement. The total cost is $1816.00 and is broken down on attached page. I would like to see funding for these signs come from the account set up with funds for tickets given in the school zone areas. It would be great if we could get approval and order the signs so they could be installed this summer before the next school year. Thanks for your attention to this matter.
