MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING
Consensus for the
Regional ITS Architecture
for the Austin Region
Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) are an important part of the operation of
surface transportation systems and service to the traveling public. The Transportation
Equity Act for the 21st Century section 5206(e) required that ITS projects implemented
using monies from the Highway Trust Fund conform to the National ITS Architecture.
This requirement was continued in the Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient
Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users section 5307(c).
A Regional ITS Architecture has been developed for the Austin Region that defines a
common framework to promote interoperability and efficiency. The architecture is an
outline for the direction of. ITS in the Austin Region as interpreted by the entities
participating in the development of the architecture. The Regional ITS Architecture will
require periodic updating to accommodate changes in this ITS vision, revisions to the
National ITS Architecture, and inclusion of additional agencies. In the Regional ITS
Architecture, the Austin Region is defined as all counties within the geographic
boundaries of the Texas Department of Transportation's Austin District (TxDOT).
The undersigned agencies hereby acknowledge the Austin Regional ITS Architecture
and pledge to work together in the Region to coordinate and cooperate in the planning,
implementation, integration, and operation of ITS systems and pledge to provide TxDOT
with the information and support necessary to maintain the Regional ITS Architecture.
This support includes the assignment of agency staff resources, cooperation of agency
management, and the application for available funding necessary to maintain and
ensure project compliance with the Regional ITS Architecture. TxDOT will serve as the
agency responsible for coordinating the maintenance of the Austin Regional ITS
Architecture.
