DATE: SUBJECT: September 25, 1990 City Council Meeting, September 27, 1990 ITEM: 11.I. Consider an ordinance amending the Animal Control Ordinance. (First Reading) STAFF RESOURCE PERSON: Jim Nuse STAFF RECOMMENDATION: At the next meeting of the City Council, Public Works will propose amending the Animal Control Ordinance to reflect altering the time in which the City must impound a dog. Currently, a dog must be kept for seven days prior to euthanasia. The proposal would allow the animal to be destroyed after 72 hours if the dog is not properly licensed and displaying such license. If a properly licensed animal is picked up, it will remain impounded a minimum of seven days and its owner will be contacted if possible. The reason for this immediate change is the lack of space in our facility. The facility can only hold 19 animals according to the Health Department criteria. It is often overcrowded and this change is necessary for relief. After the first of the year we will return with: report on cat licensing fees changes; license, neutering, impound, redemption, etc. aim for self sustaining cattle registration guard dog permit stricter vicious dog quidelines, owner accountability regular neutering/shots program, education ANIMAL CONTROL ACTIVITY - October 1, 1989 to September 13, 1990 1.
